Differences GIF, JPG and PNG Images
You can ever have wondered why some pictures have. Gif at the end of its name, while other pictures may stop. Jpg. Although you might not have thought about this earlier, I will now try to explain simply why they differ and what it means, because it is very important when you are building a web page that will contain pictures.
Most widely used image formats on the Internet today is JPEG and GIF. Both formats have their pros and cons, and we will now take a look at what these properties are.
JPG images are very good photographic pictures. JPG images are lightweight, are of small file size because it uses “lossy compression” formatting method. Lossy compression is exactly what it says in the name, the image is compressed and therefore lose some details from the original image. The photographs are the effects of lossy compression minimal, while the images with clear sharp lines may appear blurry. Thus, for photographs, it is best JPG image format for use on your website, but if you want a logo for example, You may select a different image formats as we shall see below.
GIF images are, unlike JPG, very good for illustrations, such as logos and images that have large areas of the same color. Good for images with fewer colors, that is. GIF image format is not that you would choose for photographs because it can only display 256 colors. All these colors may seem like a lot but the truth is a colorful photograph can contain millions of different colors. The more shades of color, the lower the GIF image.
GIF image format is useful for example need to have pictures with transparent background (transparency) or only to a certain part of the image should be transparent. You can not do with JPG.
An alternative to these image formats are PNG format. This is an excellent format that has taken the best elements of both previously mentioned formats and also has more good qualities. However, as PNG has a nagging problem, the currently largest browser Microsoft Internet Explorer does not support full PNG image formats.
Transparent images
GIF is very good choice if you want simple pictures with transparent background. But as soon as you need more advanced visual effects becomes GIF format flawed. A good feature of PNG is that it supports trans-parity on multiple levels, and not as GIF only “transparency on or off”. With PNG, you can make an image with a transparent background but still have the image cast a shadow, exactly as our image example above shows.
